We have successfully completed the full space qualification of our CORTEX Battery Unit (CBU). With a mass of approximately 2.75 kg (6.06 lbm) and volume of 68.9 mm x 126.5 mm x 177.80 mm
(2.714″ x 4.98″ x 7.00″) this compact assembly provides 216 W-Hr of energy at up to 8 V across two Yardney NCP 25-1 cells. Each unit comes equipped with internal LM135A precision temperature sensors providing both the individual cell temperatures through the external interface connector. Redundant pin pairs on the external power output support current up to 12 A for each pair. The CBU was designed for storage up to 3 years and the internal cells have been flight qualified on several programs lasting well over 7 years in space. The qualification program included Vibration and Shock testing, and Thermal Vacuum testing at operational temperatures of -20 to +40 degrees C. All flight units undergo acceptance vibration, thermal cycling and complete comprehensive functional testing prior to delivery.
The CBU is a robust, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) battery unit solution for small satellites and spacecraft and is now available as a space-qualified product in the Spaceflight Industries CORTEX line.
